First Impressions...Do they matter?

Hello reader...it is Wednesday!!! Mid week...downhill to the weekend (if you work! or even if you don't). There is a whole different vibe when the weekend arrives. Wednesdays are a middle of the week milestone, if you are one that has lots of things to check off during the typical work week. That was an initial thought when considering what would be a good day to post something and to give you a few words to chew on, as you make your way to the finish line on Friday. Hopefully a few thoughts might be like a little "pick me up" or maybe a little diversion as you continue on your journey to get to that coveted weekend.

Moving on...I would like to ask you something: What comes to mind when you hear those words: "First Impressions"? Do you believe in first impressions? For yourself and/or others? Have you heard it said that people typically/often form a first impression opinion in less than a minute? Depending on the circumstance and whether or not one is prepared to be on the receiving part of say, an introduction, the first impression you may leave may or may not be what you would have hoped for or assumed. First impressions can relate to people as in meeting someone new; when you go for an interview and meet a potential "new boss" for the first time; or when you try on something off the rack at your favorite store. Have you ever pulled something spectacular off the hanger, only to try it on to see yourself in it and are completely mortified? You thought it looked amazing, but even more amazing with you in it! If mirrors could talk!!! Further, entering a new coffee shop for the first time certainly gives a first impression. Do you agree? No doubt the "marketing team" is aware of first impressions, and are keen to know how the newbies might receive their new venue.

But, what and how do you feel when you enter someone's home; as you step into their space for the very first time? Does anything register right away? Do you conjure up a few words to describe your initial feelings/experience…first impression? Are you curious about moving beyond that front door entrance? For better or for worse? Front door experiences always pique curiosity, especially because there is something innate that wants to know if the rest of this “dwelling” is on par. Quite often, foyers, front door entryways tell a similar story that relates with the rest of the home. Unless there are home projects going on or it is revealed that the intentions are to bring cohesiveness to the rest of the house, it is a pretty safe bet that the entryway is the first chapter of its home tour. So, why is this relative to you? Well, most likely you have some type of entrance area, be it a formal front entryway foyer or simply a front door that sets you immediately in the home proper. What you have is what you got! I will say that our “foyer” is a 4 foot by 4 foot step into our home. The only thing that makes it “formal” is that you have to step UP into the living room, which you can see all there is once your feet are planted in that little square. BUT, even if this is all you have, there is so much you can still do to enhance the experience for all that enter. And, it has nothing (or little) to do with money. It’s just about getting creative with your particular space. In our house, we have just hung a huge piece of artwork we purchased recently. Initially, I thought this artwork was going to be perfect for a completely different space. But, it just didn’t work. So, it is in our foyer and indeed, we feel anyway, in its rightful place. Another thing we did was to replace the front door, which was original to the house, but very inefficient. The door we chose is in keeping with a more modern or contemporary vibe, as this home was built in the early 60’s. It is so sharp with a huge piece of glass that lets much more natural light (which was needed badly). The glass is obscured so there is still privacy, yet no need for a covering. The floor has been newly tiled and now its time for a perfect small rug and a pretty entry ceiling light fixture (next on the list). If your entryway needs a little lift, take some time to rethink what you might do to spruce it up and make a lasting first impression.

Thanks for reading today. Have a nice week. Until next time, good on you! Jeanine
